Program Addresses Childhood Obesity

The Creating Healthy Communities Program sponsored an Ounce of Prevention training program for the Community Health Centers of Greater Dayton on December 10. Dr. Robert Murray from Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus presented to 27 staff.

The Ounce of Prevention Program is a collaborative effort between the Ohio Department of Health and the American Academy of Pediatrics-Ohio Chapter. The program was developed to address the growing epidemic of childhood obesity. This preventive approach is designed to provide simple tools for physicians to educate parents about good nutrition and physical activity for their children.

By providing nutrition and physical activity messages and routinely reviewing the child’s height and weight, it is hoped that many cases of childhood obesity will be prevented.
