Veggie U Kits: Dayton Public Schools

Our Creating Healthy Communities Program provided “Veggie U Kits” to the three Dayton Public community-based schools in our target neighborhoods (Cleveland, Kiser and Ruskin).

VeggieThe Veggie U curriculum is a science-based program that offers a hands-on seed – planting – harvest experience. A complete grow kit is provided along with a comprehensive teacher’s manual written to cover state and national 4th grade science standards. The classroom lessons include studies of soil, composting, planting, nutrition and plant anatomy. The students also care for a worm farm, raise a mini “crop,” and celebrate the end of the Veggie U lessons with a veggie tasting party.

Veggie U has been such a tremendous success that all DPS plan on making this a core component of their 4th grade science curriculum. All three principals report that not only have students been enthusiastic about Veggie U, but parents have made many positive comments.

National Infant Immunization Week (NIIW)

NIW April 21st-28th is National Infant Immunization Week (NIIW).

The goal of the Immunization Program is to increase awareness about immunizations across the life span, from infants to the elderly. NIIW is the perfect time to remind family, friends, co-workers, and those in the community to immunize their children, as well as catch up on their own vaccinations.

Public Health-Dayton & Montgomery County holds outreach clinics for children each month.
