Tattoo Establishments

The tattooing process is an invasive procedure in which inks are placed just under the epidermis with a solid needle attached to a reciprocating, motorized hand piece. The process causes a small amount of bleeding by the person being tattooed. The potential for bloodborne disease transmission exists if needles are not sterilized between patrons.

The popularity of tattooing has grown significantly in recent years. In 1994, five operators were licensed. Currently, there are approximately twenty-five tattoo and body piercing establishments that are licensed and inspected.

Included in the state rules for tattoo and body piercing establishments are requirements for operator and artist training, and routine performance tests of the establishment’s autoclave.

All complaints of unlicensed tattoo artists operating out of homes are investigated.
