The Public Health - Dayton & Montgomery County is requesting proposals from qualified individuals or organizations to provide expertise in providing project management and promotion of a new program for Montgomery County residents. The Montgomery County Family and Children First Council funded grant is to fund the Montgomery County FASD (Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders) Community Capacity Building Project a novel program to build the community awareness on this issue, establish connections with community partners, and provide the community with the tools needed to incorporate the issue of FASD into their daily lifestyle.
Centerville battles Vandalia in GetUp Challenge

Health Commissioner Jim Gross of Public Health – Dayton & Montgomery County announced that the cities of Centerville and Vandalia are beginning a 7-month challenge for bragging rights as the healthier city. The competition will see which city can win the most points by following the 5-2-1-Almost None lifestyle behaviors.
Montgomery County is down in the Health Rankings

Montgomery County ranks 68th healthiest out of 88 counties in Ohio, according to a new report released today by the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. The County Health Rankings are the first to rank the overall health of the counties in all 50 states – more than 3,000 total – by using a standard formula to measure how healthy people are and how long they live.
Board of Health takes the pledge and challenges other boards

The Board of Health of Public Health – Dayton & Montgomery County today took the pledge to abide by the 5-2-1-Almost None message, part of the GetUp Montgomery County campaign. The campaign is committed to helping our community live healthier. The objective is to help children and families have fun, make smart eating choices, and move and play every day.
Public Health receives ODH Grant for Creating Healthy Communities Program

Public Health – Dayton & Montgomery County has received a $105,000, Creating Healthy Communities Program (CHCP) grant from the Ohio Department of Health. Beginning in January, Public Health in collaboration with other community partners will develop and implement programs designed to promote physical activity and healthy eating, improve access to quality preventive health care services and address health disparities in southeast Dayton with the potential for more neighborhoods to be included and additional funding for subsequent years.
Leading Area Organizations Support Healthy Lifestyles Initiative

GetUp Montgomery County, a new healthy lifestyle initiative for kids and families, today announced the first of many community partnerships designed to mobilize community action for the health and wellness of local children. The following are designated GetUp Gold Star Partners: Boonshoft Museum of Discovery, CareSource Foundation, Centerville City Schools, City of Dayton, CompuNet Clinical Laboratories, Cox Ohio Media, Five Rivers MetroParks, Kettering Health Network, McGohan Brabender, Montgomery County, Premier Health Partners, Public Health – Dayton & Montgomery County, Sinclair Community College, South Community, Inc., The Children’s Medical Center of Dayton and YMCA of Greater Dayton.
Almost 10 Percent of U.S. Medical Costs Tied to Obesity

Obesity in the United States now carries the hefty price tag of $147 billion per year in direct medical costs, just over 9 percent of all medical spending, experts report.

Parents Must be More Vigilant in Light of Growing Number of Crib Recalls

The recall of about 1 million Kolcraft play yards on July 8, 2009, was only the most recent in a series of crib, bassinet, and play yard recalls totaling almost 2.5 million units since the start of 2009.
