Welcome to the Not A Single Pound Challenge, an exciting and fun way that can help you prevent putting on those extra pounds over the holiday season. Most of us add a pound or two every year over the Thanksgiving – New Year’s time frame. The problem is that we gain a few pounds, but we don’t lose them. Then all of a sudden ten years later, we wonder how in the world did I gain these extra 20 pounds.
Public Health – Dayton & Montgomery County has been promoting Not A Single Pound for four years. It’s an approach aimed at preventing weight gain over the holidays.
Many groups and organizations set up a semi-formal process wherein employees are “officially weighed at the start and at the finish”, while others choose to do self-reporting.
Individuals who are not part of an organized group can register online and then use the tracking tool to stay abreast of their progress.
If you’re part of a group or organization, you can still use the charting tool, but the tool is separate from the weighing process of your groups. The charting tool is primarily a way for you to judge your progress during the holidays. For example, if 3 weeks after the start of the challenge you notice you’ve gained 3 pounds, you will know you’re going the wrong direction. If you finish the challenge at the same weight as your starting weight, then you’ve met the challenge and had a successful holiday season.
The challenge is built around the daily healthy lifestyle prescription of 5-2-1-AN.
5 – Eat five servings of fruits and vegetables
2 – Spend less than 2 hours of leisure time in front of the TV, computer, or video games.
1 – Get at least 1 hour of physical activity
AN – Drink Almost None of those sugary soda or juice-flavored drinks.
5-2-1-AN is part of the GetUp Montgomery County effort. You can find more information at http://getupmc.org. It’s a lifestyle choice which can help you maintain your weight and improve your health for the rest of your life.
