Dayton HIV/AIDS Prevention Recognizes World AIDS Day
World AIDS Day (WAD) is celebrated on December 1st each year around the world. It has become one of the most known international health days and a key way to raise awareness, honor those who have passed on, and celebrate victories such as increased access to treatment and prevention services.
“Getting to Zero” is the theme for WAD. This theme, which will be used until 2015, echoes the Joint United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) vision of achieving “Zero new HIV infections, Zero discrimination, and Zero AIDS-related deaths”. Learn more about the UNAIDS strategy: www.unaids.org.
The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates there are now 33.4 million people living with HIV. According to 2008 figures, a likely 2.7 million were newly infected with the virus and 2 million died of AIDS the same year.
Most of those with HIV and AIDS live in lower and middle-income countries, but today HIV is a threat to men, women and children all around the world.
The Dayton HIV/AIDS Prevention Committee is asking individuals to become more proactive about the threat of HIV/AIDS. They can start by participating in the following testing events on Thursday, December 1.
