Public Health – Dayton & Montgomery County is leading a community-wide effort to encourage everybody in the county to do their part in combating obesity by choosing healthier lifestyles. GetUp is a community-based initiative whose goal is to increase physical activity and healthy eating for children, youth and families in Dayton and Montgomery County.

Reducing obesity and encouraging people to choose healthier lifestyles involves a long-term community commitment. We are confident that over time the GetUp Initiative will lead to a healthier Montgomery County.

Obesity is a major problem both locally and across the country. Statistics show that over one third of kids are either overweight or obese. Think about that… one third. These children are health problems waiting to happen. Their odds of suffering from diabetes, heart disease, and many other health-related issues go up drastically. About 70% of Montgomery County adults are also overweight or obese.

GetUp Challenges

There are many simple ways to improve your overall health. GetUp can help you start on your path to improved wellness by using the tracker. Our GetUp Challenge allows you to take small steps instead of attempting major changes all at once. It’s simple – organizations can sign up to participate in incorporating the 5-2-1-0 prescription into their daily lifestyles:

  • Eat at least 5 servings of fruits and vegetables each day
  • Spend less than 2 hours of leisure screen time each day on TV, video and/or computer games
  • Get at least 1 hour of physical activity
  • Drink 0 sugary drinks

Each individual within the organization will register themselves to track points. Points are tracked over a period of time for each of the 4 categories. We recommend a minimum of 6 weeks to get the best chance of changing behaviors into healthy ones. There is opportunity for organizations to create friendly competition by creating teams and one team to earn “bragging rights” by having the most points at the end of the challenge. But we have to remember that everyone is a winner when we’re all adapting to a healthier lifestyle! At the end of the challenge, you will receive totals, feedback, and resources from our GetUp staff to help your organization maintain a healthier lifestyle and become a healthier community.
