• Subline Title: About 1.2 million people in the United States have HIV, and about 13% are unaware they are infected.

The Ohio HIV/AIDS Prevention Committee (HAPC) of Region 9 (Clark, Darke, Greene, Miami,
Montgomery, and Preble counties) recognizes National HIV Testing Day&(NHTD) which is observed annually on June 27. The 2026 NHTD theme “Level up Your Self-love: Check Your Status”, focuses on valuing yourself, showing yourself compassion and respect, and honoring your health needs with self-love. Knowing your HIV status helps you choose options to stay healthy.

The Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is the virus that causes AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome), which is the most advanced stage of HIV infection. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), as of 2024, about 1.2 million people in the United States are living with HIV and about 13% are unaware they are infected. On average, there are over 30,000 new HIV infections each year. In 2025, Ohio had a total of 924 new HIV cases. Region 9 accounted for 108 of that number (11.7%). Montgomery had 74 cases, followed by Clark with 20. These two counties had the most cases in region 9.

The CDC recommends that everyone 13 to 64 years old get tested for HIV at least once as part of routine health care and that people at higher risk for HIV get tested more often. Risk factors for HIV include having vaginal or anal sex with someone who is HIV positive or whose HIV status in unknown, having sex with multiple partners, and injecting drugs and sharing needles or other drug equipment with others. Pregnant women should get tested for HIV so they can start immediate treatment if they test positive. Receiving prompt treatment helps to prevent the virus from passing on to the baby.

HIV testing is the first step to staying healthy, connecting people to the right care whether their result is positive or negative. People who receive a negative test result can take advantage of HIV prevention tools such as pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), condoms, vaccines and testing for other sexually transmitted infections. People who receive positive test results can rapidly start HIV treatment  to stay healthy.
