National Women & Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day

The HIV/AIDS Prevention Committee of Region 7 in partnership with Mahogany’s Child of Premier Health, is hosting a free event, “Rocking our Red Pumps”, to recognize National Women & Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day.

This National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day encourages women and girls to make the best choices when it comes to sexual health.

As of June 30, 2016, there were 299 females living with a diagnosis of HIV in Montgomery County. This represents 21% of the total HIV infections.

While HIV and AIDS can be confusing, women can learn how to stay safe and healthy, and educate friends and family to do the same. Keep in mind, the “best defense against HIV is a good offense.” Love yourself, practice safer sex, and take action to help end HIV and AIDS.

Learn how to fight against HIV! Put on your red pumps (or any red shoes) and come enjoy Girl Talk with Mocktails and Hors d’oeuvres.  There will be a variety of educational activities including FREE HIV testing, fun entertainment, and the “Cutest Red Shoes” contest.

Protect yourself and your partner by:

    • Using condoms the right way every time you have sex.
    • Choosing less risky sexual behaviors.
    • Limiting your number of sexual partners.
    • Never sharing needles.
    • Talking to your doctor about pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) if you are at very high risk for HIV.
    • Talking to your doctor about post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) if you think you may have been exposed to HIV within the last 3 days through sex, sharing needles and works, or a sexual assault.
    • Getting treated if you are HIV-positive.
    • Get tested and encourage others to do the same.

 

    Public Health is a member of the HIV/AIDS Prevention Committee of Region 7 which is hard at work in the fight against HIV/AIDS. The Committee offers case management, linkage to care, HIV testing, education, counseling, and referral services.
