Arthritis can limit one’s ability to engage in daily activities by causing joint pain that can limit mobility, which, over time, can place individuals at greater risk of falling. According to the Arthritis Foundation, the more joints that are affected by arthritis, the greater the risk. The Tai Chi for injury prevention program helps participants improve these chances by increasing physical activity, easing pain, and, in turn, decreasing the chances of a fall.

What is Tai Chi

Dr. Paul Lam developed Tai Chi for Arthritis using the Tai Chi Sun Style with special modifications for arthritis.

A certified instructor leads classes. Participants practice movements at a slow pace to stay within their comfort zones. Movements can also be modified for mobility issues and may be done seated.

Each Session Includes:

Warm-up and cool-down exercises, plus participants will learn 1-2 new movements per class, progressing to learn 6 core and 6 advanced movements in addition to breathing techniques.

Benefits Include:

  • Increased muscle strength, improved balance, flexibility, and posture.
  • Increased muscle strength, improved balance, flexibility, and posture.
  • Lessened arthritis pain and symptoms.
  • Reduced back pain.

Individuals must be Montgomery County residents and must be 18 years old.

How Tai Chi Helps with preventing injuries

Improves Joint Mobility: Tai Chi's slow, flowing movements help to gently stretch and strengthen muscles around the joints, which can enhance flexibility and range of motion. This is particularly beneficial for individuals with arthritis, as it helps maintain or improve joint function without causing additional strain.

Reduces Pain: Regular practice of Tai Chi has been shown to help reduce arthritis-related pain. Additionally, the focus on relaxation and deep breathing helps to manage and reduce stress, which can contribute to pain perception.

Enhances Balance and Coordination: Arthritis can affect balance and coordination, increasing the risk of falls. Tai Chi emphasizes weight shifting and slow, controlled movements, which can improve balance, stability, and overall coordination. This can be especially beneficial for individuals with arthritis, who may be at higher risk for falls and injuries.

Strengthens Muscles: By engaging in Tai Chi, individuals can strengthen the muscles surrounding the affected joints. Stronger muscles help support and stabilize the joints, reducing the load and stress placed on them during daily activities.

Promotes Relaxation and Stress Reduction: The meditative aspect of Tai Chi encourages relaxation and mental calmness. Reducing stress and tension can help alleviate the psychological and emotional burden associated with chronic pain and arthritis.

Improves Physical Activity: Regular practice of Tai Chi can lead to improvements in the overall physical activities of daily living. This can enhance the quality of life for individuals with arthritis by making everyday tasks easier and more manageable.
